The study of meaning (semantics) and the study of meaning in context (pragmatics) are combined in this course. It examines language from the perspective of its users, focusing in particular on the decisions individuals make, the limitations they run into while using language in social interactions, and the effects their language use has on the other parties involved in a communication act. Meaning and Context, Reference and Inference, Presupposition and Entailment, Deixis, Cooperation and Implicature, Speech Acts and Events, Politeness and Interaction, and Discourse and Culture are some of the subjects that will be covered.
